Acupuncture

Chinese Medicine today is the culmination of approximately 5000 years of both village and court medicine, structured into a solid framework that facilitates its practice all over the world. It’s philosophical roots are in Taoism and the Eastern cultural way of life. Chinese medicine is a global medicine, as it gives us a way to understand the complexities of each and every persons body and mind.

On its own, Chinese Medicine is a complete stand-alone system of medicine, which is well integrated within the medical model and other complimentary therapies.

Its primary treatment tools are Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, as well as ancillary techniques such as tuina (chinese massage), cupping,  gua sha, and moxibustion.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

No two health presentations are the same, which is why it’s essential that you receive a diagnosis from a qualified Chinese Herbalist before taking a chinese medicine formula. Even with the same symptoms, you may find that two people are given different prescriptions to address their complaints, so we will tailor each herbal prescription individually for you.

Silk Tree sources only the highest quality capsules, pills and supplements available, and we will always try to find a better product if it becomes available.

All powdered chinese herbal medicines and honey pearls are supplied from Australia’s first wholesaler to provide pure organic herbs, no additives, no carriers. They are the highest quality Eastern and Western herbs, independent AAA three tier tested to consistently ensure the herbs are 100% free of pesticides and tested for heavy metals.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is the traditional Chinese medical therapy used to infuse heat/warmth (yang) into the body. Its power lies in the near infrared frequency that it burns at, activating the body’s natural healing and warming abilities. It is performed by holding a moxa stick over certain acupuncture points in the body, chosen individually for each treatment to support you. Moxa is traditionally made up from dried mugwort leaves, rolled into cigar like shapes to create the desired effect.

At Silk Tree we use smokeless moxa, which is a compressed charcoal version of the mugwort leaves, and provides the same therapeutic effects, as compared to the raw dried mugwort leaf with minimal residual odour. The moxa stick does not make contact with the skin and is always performed by a qualified practitioner.

Cupping

Cupping has been used in Chinese Medicine for as long as it has existed (and maybe before!). It utilises suction created with glass cups applied to certain areas of the body, depending on your presenting complaints. This will act to move blood and lymph to assist in healing.

Most often cups are applied on the back, however they can be placed anywhere on the body. It is not unusual for the cups to leave behind a mark on the skin, that is not dissimilar to bruising.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha works in a similar fashion to cupping to stretch connective tissue and break up any adhesions in the body. It is also referred to as scraping, and actually translates to ‘scrape sand’ as the marks it creates on the body look like small red sand dots.

It is helpful for musculoskeletal conditions and can also reduce inflammation, and improve healthy blood flow.
